چکیده

This paper presents three results in singular value analysis of Hankel operators for nonlinear input–output systems. First, the notion of a Schmidt pair is defined for a nonlinear Hankel operator. This makes it possible to define a Hankel singular value function from a purely input–output point of view and without introducing a state space setting. However, if a state space realization is known to exist then a set of sufficient conditions is given for the existence of a Schmidt pair, and the state space provides a convenient representation of the corresponding singular value function. Finally, it is shown that in a specific coordinate frame it is possible to relate this new singular value function definition to the original state space notion used to describe nonlinear balanced realizations. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Dissipativity preserving balancing for nonlinear systems - A Hankel operator approach

In this paper we present a version of the balancing technique for nonlinear systems which are dissipative with respect to a general quadratic supply rate that depends on the input and the output of the system. We discuss an input output approach that allows us to apply the theory of balancing based upon Hankel singular value analysis. In order to do that we prove that the available storage and ...

On Singular Value Functions and Hankel Operators for Nonlinear Systems

In linear system theory, the Hankel singular values are often computed in a state space setting using the product of Gramian matrices. They are known, however, to be intrinsically dependent only on the input-output map and not on any choice of state space coordinates. In the nonlinear case, there are well defined notions of singular value functions and a Hankel operator, but the connections bet...

Model reduction of bilinear systems described by input-output difference equation

A class of single input single output bilinear systems described by their input–output difference equation is considered. A simple expression for the Volterra kernels of the system is derived in terms of the coefficients of difference equation. An algorithm, based on the singular value decomposition of a generalized Hankel matrix, is also developed. The algorithm is then used to find a reduced-...

Optimal Hankel norm model reduction by truncation of trajectories

We show how optimal Hankel-norm approximations of dynamical systems allow for a straightforward interpretation in terms of system trajectories. It is shown that for discrete time single-input systems optimal reductions are obtained by cutting ’balanced trajectories’, i.e., by disconnecting the past and future in the input-output pairs relating to leftand right singular vectors of the system. A ...

Time-Varying Eigensystem Realization Algorithm

An identification algorithm called the time-varying eigensystem realization algorithm is proposed to realize discrete-time-varying plant models from input and output experimental data. It is shown that this singular value decomposition based method is a generalization of the eigensystem realization algorithm developed to realize time invariant models from pulse response sequences. Using the res...
